Event Overview

On June 16, 2022, in commemoration of the Day of the African Child, a powerful seminar and awareness march was held in Mtoni Kijichi Ward, Temeke District, Dar es Salaam. This event was inspired by alarming reports of children going missing under unclear circumstances and rising cases of abuse, particularly sexual violence.

Why Mtoni Kijichi?

As a youth mentor and concerned community member, I chose this ward deliberately after hearing multiple cases involving children in distress. It was evident that urgent awareness and education were needed, not only for the children but also for the larger community.

Objectives of the Seminar

  • Educate children on self-defense and their right to say NO.

  • Empower students to speak out without fear when they or their peers experience abuse.

  • Train teachers and local leaders on identifying and responding to child protection cases.

  • Encourage community accountability in protecting young lives.

What Happened

With full cooperation from the local leadership and school administrations, especially the Head Teachers of Mtoni Kijichi and Bwawani Primary Schools, we conducted:

  • A life-changing seminar for students and teachers.

  • An impactful awareness march (“maandamano”) featuring banners and posters with bold messages such as:

“Tuwalinde na Tuwatunze – Ni Taifa la Kesho”
(Let’s protect and care for them – they are tomorrow’s nation)

Community Support

The event received overwhelming support from:

  • The Ward Executive Officer (Miss Nyambura)

  • Local government officials and teachers

  • Parents and guardians who recognized the importance of this awareness

Their collaboration made this day a true success, reminding everyone that protecting children is a collective responsibility.

Gratitude and Reflection

We are incredibly thankful to everyone who made this event possible. Seeing the children empowered and actively engaging in these life-saving conversations showed us that this kind of initiative must continue—and expand.
